Joseph the Carpenter by Georges de La Tour: what it depicts
Joseph the Carpenter by Georges de La Tour
A boy holding a candle
Joseph is at work, bending over a beam with an auger, and the child holds the candle so he can see. That is the whole scene. The candle lights the boy's face from below and shines through his fingers, and Joseph, in the shadow, looks up at him. The beam on the floor lies crosswise — La Tour did not need to say what the carpenter was making.
La Tour painted candlelight better than anyone, in a Lorraine that was being devastated by the Thirty Years' War, and many of his surviving pictures are night scenes like this one: a single flame, two or three figures, silence.
The Louvre
Given to the Louvre in 1948 by the English dealer Percy Moore Turner, at a time when La Tour, forgotten for two centuries, was just being rediscovered.
