Christ and the Rich Young Ruler by Heinrich Hofmann: what it depicts
Christ and the Rich Young Ruler by Heinrich Hofmann
Go, sell what you have
The young man in the turban and silk has asked what he must do to inherit eternal life, and has been told. He looks down, one hand resting on his hip; he is about to walk away sad. Jesus looks straight at him and with one open hand indicates the two figures at the left — an old man and a woman in rags, the poor he has just been asked to give everything to. Hofmann paints the choice at the instant before it is made.
Dresden to Riverside
Heinrich Hofmann's Christ — gentle, bearded, in a red robe — became the face of Jesus for generations of Protestants and Catholics alike, through prints and Sunday-school cards. John D. Rockefeller Jr bought this canvas and two others and gave them to Riverside Church in New York, where they hang.
About this print
