Roberto Ferruzzi

Roberto Ferruzzi was an Italian painter born in 1853 in Sebenico, Dalmatia (present-day Šibenik, Croatia), and later resided in Italy. Although he was not originally trained in painting—having initially sought a career in law—Ferruzzi eventually became a self-taught artist. His body of work bridges the transition from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, often focusing on emotional and spiritual themes. Ferruzzi’s significance in the art world is tied primarily to his ability to convey tenderness and humanity, especially through the intimate, serene expressions seen in his figures. Though he contributed numerous pieces throughout his career, Ferruzzi is best remembered for his 1897 painting “Madonnina,” widely recognized as “Virgin Mary and Child Jesus.” Despite producing other works, this particular painting became a cultural icon, celebrated for its gentle representation of maternal love and spiritual purity.
