Pompeo Girolamo Batoni (1708–1787) was an eminent Italian painter who bridged the stylistic transition between the late Baroque and Neoclassicism. Born in Lucca, Batoni moved to Rome in his twenties, where he swiftly rose to prominence. His meticulous portraits and religious paintings made him a favorite among European aristocrats on the Grand Tour as well as among the clergy during an era shaped by evolving artistic sensibilities.
Batoni brought a refined classicism to Roman painting, merging the grand drama of Baroque with the calming clarity and balance presaged by Neoclassicism. His workshop was prolific, and he established a lasting legacy by training a new generation of artists and solidifying Rome's status as an artistic capital.
