Nikolaos Kallergis (1699–1747) was born on Zakynthos, the son of the painter and priest Fragiskos Kalergis, whose family had moved to the island from Rethymno in Crete. He was taught to paint from a young age, and the first documentary record of his work dates from 1744, for an icon of Christ in the Church of the Faneromeni on Zakynthos.
He was a member of the Heptanese School of the Ionian Islands and a representative of the Greek Rococo, painting with a Venetian influence. Thirty-two of his paintings survive, and he also painted frescoes in the family church of Saint Anna on Zakynthos.
