Lelio Orsi

1 work in the collection

Lelio Orsi (c. 1508–1587), also known as Lelio da Novellara, was a Mannerist painter and architect who was born and died in Novellara and did much of his work in nearby Reggio. He appears to have studied under Giovanni Giarola, a pupil of Correggio, and documents place him in Rome in 1554–55. His painting combines something of Correggio's ethereal simplicity with the contorted poses, distorted perspective and crowded settings of Mannerism, and Giulio Romano and Michelangelo are among his likely influences. He worked on both exterior and interior decoration, but much of his output was small cabinet pictures rather than large altarpieces, and many of them passed into the collections of the Este dukes at Ferrara.
