Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) was a painter of the academic art, born in Vesoul. He worked in Paris, Algeria and Greece. He trained under Paul Delaroche and Charles Gleyre. He died in 9th arrondissement of Paris in 1904. Among his documented works are The Slave Market, Pollice Verso and Phryne before the Areopagus.
