James Tissot (1836–1902) was a painter of the Japonisme, born in Nantes. He worked in Paris, London and Ramsgate. He trained under Hippolyte Flandrin and Louis Lamothe. He died in Chenecey-Buillon in 1902. Among his documented works are What Our Lord Saw from the Cross, Le Cercle de la rue Royale and The Shop Girl.
