Giovanni Battista Naldini

1 work in the collection

Giovanni Battista Naldini (1535–1591) was a late Mannerist painter from Florence, active there and in Rome. He was apprenticed to Pontormo from 1549 to 1557, and in 1562 he was recruited to work for Giorgio Vasari. For the Studiolo of Francesco I in the Palazzo Vecchio he painted two crowded pictures, the Allegory of Dreams and the Gathering of Ambergris, and he supplied altarpieces to Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce. Around 1580 he frescoed the chapel of Saint John the Baptist in Trinità dei Monti in Rome, a cycle that survives in good condition. Both his teachers had been pupils of Andrea del Sarto, and his style descends, at some distance, from Sarto's own. Francesco Curradi was among his pupils. Here: Lamentation over the Dead Christ.
