David Teniers the Younger

David Teniers the Younger (1610–1690) was born in Antwerp, trained under his father David Teniers the Elder, and worked in Antwerp, Brussels and London. Rubens and Adriaen Brouwer are both recorded among his influences. He is best known for peasant scenes, kitchens and taverns — the Flemish genre tradition at its most accomplished — but his career had another dimension. As court painter and keeper of the collection to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, governor of the Spanish Netherlands, he catalogued one of the great picture collections of the century and painted the gallery interiors that record it. Those paintings remain a primary source for what the collection contained. Four works here, which show the religious side of his output rather than the tavern: a Lamentation, a Madonna and Child with St Dorothy, the Feast of the Prodigal Son, and Leander Found by the Nereids.
