Bonifazio Veronese

Bonifazio Veronese (1487–1553) was born in Verona, trained under Palma Vecchio, and spent his working life in Venice. He ran one of the busiest workshops in the city, and the scale of its output is the reason his name is less familiar than it might be: a great deal of work left the studio under his direction rather than his hand, and attribution has been debated ever since. Jacopo Tintoretto is recorded among those who trained there. His own manner is characteristically Venetian — warm colour, relaxed grouping, landscape treated generously — applied most often to the sacra conversazione, the Virgin and Child attended by saints in an unhurried outdoor setting. Four works here, three of them variations on exactly that subject, along with Dives and Lazarus.
