Boccaccio Boccaccino

1 work in the collection

Boccaccio Boccaccino (c. 1467–c. 1525) was born in Ferrara and trained there, probably under Domenico Panetti. Few facts of his life are known, though Vasari included him in his Lives. He worked in Venice, Ferrara and above all Cremona, where he founded a school in which Garofalo was a pupil, and where he died. His principal work is the fresco cycle in Cremona Cathedral, painted between 1506 and 1519, showing the Birth of the Virgin and scenes from her life. The historian Lanzi admired his other paintings for their rich drapery, varied colour, graceful poses and harmonious landscape, and several pictures once given to Perugino, Pinturicchio and Garofalo are now attributed to him. His son and pupil Camillo Boccaccino also painted in Cremona. Here: Christ Carrying the Cross.
