Alonso Cano

Alonso Cano (1601–1667) was a Spanish painter, sculptor and architect, born in Granada. He learned architecture from his father, Miguel Cano, painting from Juan del Castillo and from Francisco Pacheco, the teacher of Velázquez, and sculpture from Juan Martínez Montañés. Besides his native city he worked in Seville, Madrid, Málaga and Valencia. He became painter to Philip IV and instructor to the young prince Balthasar Charles, and in 1652 the king made him a canon of Granada Cathedral so that he could serve as its chief architect. He designed the cathedral's façade late in life, and it was built to his design after his death. The Prado holds a number of his paintings, among them The Dead Christ supported by an Angel and Saint Bernard and the Virgin. Here: Immaculate Conception.
